The Taichung Jazz Festival, marking its 17th anniversary this year, will be held after the Double Tenth National Day. Based on the theme of “Jazz You Up”,top bands and musicians from a total of 15 countries were invited from the United States, St. Lucia, Belize, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Poland, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Japan bringing 53 wonderful performances. Collaborating with 100 groups of street performers, 25 booths of exotic food, 10 booths of 20 creative handcrafts, local flavors are fused into the city’s most unique art festival, achieving the benefits of marketing the city’s cultural tourism and leisure industries.

This year’s lineup of performance cast is strong, including 1997 Grammy Award winner for Best Instrumental Solo, 2010 Grammy Award winner for Best Jazz Ensemble Album Saxophone player Antonio Hart, and 2009 American Independent Music Award Best Jazz Album Award winner, Derrick Gardner, trumpeter of the Count Basie Orchestra, and Anna Maria Jopek, winner of the Polish Fredrick Award will share their classic jazz masterpieces on the stage of Taichung Jazz Festival this year.

2019 also coincides with the 100th birthday anniversary of Art Blakey, an American jazz drummer who was respectfully known as the “Master of Rhythm”, so the Jazz Festival specially invited some outstanding Taiwanese jazz musicians, including the”Drummer King of Taiwan” teacher Huang Rui-Feng, as well as Xie Ming-Yan, Xu Yu-Ying, Xu Chong-Yu, to form a festival band and produce a special program by revising and performing Art Blakey’s classic songs, to celebrate and pay a tribute to the jazz master.

On the last Jazz Band Night,”Taipei Jazz Band”, which just won Taipei’s Outstanding Performing Arts Group Awards this year, will per forma brand-new program. In addition, Thailand’s premier jazz school, “Rang sit University Jazz Band of Thailand”, was also invited to perform in Taichung. There is very much something to be looking forward to.

This October, let’s gather in Taichung, open up our minds, immerse ourselves in the wonderful space of music, let our bodies dance freely with the music, and jazz You Up with ease.
